Hot Water Music

1. Not that people need another reason to hate on the Calgary Flames, but this H1N1 vaccination business is pathetic and a real disconnect from the fans. Jumping the queue is a terrible public relations move, and can’t be defended. Apparently, the players’ families also received the preferential treatment. Global news reported tonight that the Flames were the only Canadian NHL club to get the shots, but that they had not heard back from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Check out the comments from team captain Jerome Iginla:
We can understand the concern. We were following the medical protocol given to us and today we can see you open the papers and they’re stopping and its a shortage. So yeah, we can understand why people may be upset. With the shortage, with the stoppage of clinics, today, if that was the case, I don’t believe we would be getting that shot.
I know professional players have pretty much everything done for them — I know some of them wouldn’t know how to book a plane ticket if their life depended on it — but these guys aren’t as stupid as Iginla lets on. Surely a few of the Flames would have picked up a newspaper or turned on a television to know that none of them fall under the ‘high-risk’ category and what they were doing was selfish and wrong. What if a ‘high-risk’ person dies in Calgary this week? Good luck navigating those waters. People are looking into the matter, but the real explanation involving large sums of money for special treatment will probably never come out.
UPDATE: Word from the CBC is that some of the Leafs got the shots, too. Big surprise.
2. The other week I was reading this rip-job on Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini and it got me to thinking when, or better yet, who, would have the stones to put something like this re: Mike Kelly in the Winnipeg newspapers. Paul Friesen gets close to writing the dreaded ‘Kelly must go” column today, stopping short of calling for his dismissal. So we’re getting closer. Not to blow my own tuba, but if you can get past the poor sentence structure and countless typos you’ll see that I have alluded to an early Christmas present for alienated Winnipeg Blue Bombers fans before. Is there a “Fire Mike Kelly” post coming? Probably not. No one cares what I have to say on the subject. Except those looking for a career as a proofreader.
